The WTA tour is split 3 ways this week with less lucrative but equally intriguing tournaments taking place. The Linz tournament features 4 top 10 stars including French Open Champion Garbine Muguruza and Madison Keys, as well as veterans Cibulkova and Suarez Navarro. Muguruza the top seed has some quality opponents awaiting to contest her sector, particularly Golubic a rising Swiss talent, who ousted 8th seed Siegemund in Round 1.
Another German Goerges has the ability to cause the pinup Spaniard a problem or two. The 2nd quadrant features Madison Keys, who has a tough 1st opponent in the form of the luckless Camilla Giorgi of Italy. Sorana Cirstea of Romania, aged 26 poses a threat to Keys, as she also ousted a seed, defeating Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-4 6-2. Misaki Doi of Japan and French qualifier Dodin both advanced to Round 2 also.
Russia’s 7th seed Daria Kasatkina was stunned by the young Czech Denisa Allertova 6-2 6-3; she can now look forward to meeting Anett Kontaveit for the first time. Spanish qualifier Sorribes Tormo will face compatriot Suarez Navarro after each had elementary victories.
Russian 5th seed Pavlyuchenkova was too good for the US Open surprise packet Sevastova of Latvia, and now awaits either Minella of Luxembourg or Belgian stalwart Flipkens. In an unbelievable 1st Round matchup Bencic will face Cibulkova for the first time, as she is unseeded despite her 10th ranking in the world. Near perfect high-teen temperatures await the WTA stars although, cold early mornings may upset the training procedures.
