Caroline Garcia had a fine opportunity to finish her season in glory, following her part in the heartbreak for France in the Fed Cup, who were ousted by the Czechs, but it was again despair as Russian, Ekaterina Alexandrova reigned supreme.
For the 22-year-old Russian, this is a clear career highlight, as she not moves to within reach of the top 100, and the automatic qualification to the big tournament security that goes with this.
The Russian, proved far too good for Garcia winning 6-4 6-0, but she was not the only Frenchwoman to be given a bagel by the surprise Russian star, after she dished on up to Cornet in the 3rd set of the SF clash. Garcia the top seed, was starting to look a little worn out after, 2 long matches in the QF and SF stage, against Vekic and Vikhlyantseva respectively. While the only trouble Alexandrova found herself in, was against Cornet when she replied with the 6-0.
This breakthrough afforded the Russian a 25-places rise from133rd to 108th in the world, and will give her a boost as she looks to find a place inside the top 100 in 2017. Garcia remains 24th in the world, on what many believe to be her platform year, as she showed glimpses of world class tennis in her age-23 season. Vikhlyantseva meanwhile, moves up 15 places herself for the SF result, to 151st, leaving herself plenty of work to do to find a place in the top tier of the tour next season. Cornet, receives a nice little 4 place rise for her efforts, and will look to rebuild her form after a year that saw her end the rankings in 41st. The week belongs to the young Russian, Alexandrova and will be delighted to have received a birthday present as spectacular as her 1st ever career title.
